News and Reviews

R.I.P. P-Funk and Parlet singer Debbie Wright

R.I.P. P-Funk and Parlet singer Debbie Wright

(October 15, 2017) They were in the center of the music world for over a decade, and they inspired, amused and even confused music fans with their irreverent brand of funk music. Of course, we’re talking about the P-Funk ensemble. And we are sad to inform SoulTrackers of the death at age 66 of a key member of the P-world, Debbie Wright. Wright was a key background singer on many of the biggest albums of the era, as well as a founding member of the P-Funk related female vocal group Parlet.

Second Listen: Kevin Ross Praises The “Prototype”

October 16, 2017 – A little over a year ago, I happened upon the SoundCloud site for the singer and songwriter Kevin Ross. Ross had then just recently posted some new recordings, including the featured track, a cover of “Prototype” by Andre 3000 of OutKast. I had not heard Ross’s work previously, and with great enthusiasm I introduced his work to the publisher of SoulTracks, who agreed he has a special talent.

First Listen: Introducing Louis York

October 15, 2017 --  Louis York is a Nashville-based duo composed of the versatile songwriters, producers and musicians Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony, who met in 2009 working on Chrisette Michele’s album Epiphany and have written and produced together for Bruno Mars, Ledisi, Faith Evans and many others. Since 2015, they have released two EPs, Masterpiece Theater Acts 1 and 2, both of which flow like cool rivers of sublime jazzy soul/R&B with Claude on vocals and Chuck deftly handling piano duties.

World Premiere Video: Tiffany Bynoe is feeling "Free"

(October 14, 2017) She was already a blooming star as a teenager in the 1990s; she won at the Apollo Theater, and landed a big Billboard hit with “Give Him A Love He Can Feel,” and Tiffany Bynoe (first known as Tene Williams) has continued to grow as a songwriter and artist ever since, developing a penchant for catchy songs with positive messages.

World Premiere Video: Porcelan is the "Real Thing" on lovely video

(October 13, 2017) When a singer comes with the endorsement of David Porter, that artist possesses a very significant seal of approval. Memphis based singer/songwriter Porcelan counts Porter as executive producer on her self-titled debut album. Porter, of course, helped craft the sound of Memphis soul as the first staff songwriter hired at Stax Records and he wrote memorable records for a host of artists, including Sam & Dave with his writing partner Isaac Hayes.

First Listen: Gordon Chambers will never "Forget" love

(October 13, 2017)  When listing the great soul music songwriters of the last two decades, you get to the name Gordon Chambers quickly. Gordon’s Grammy winning work with Anita Baker, as well as his hits for Beyonce, Brownstone, Angie Stone, Brandy, The Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight and more, made him one of the most sought after music men around.

"The Bodyguard" celebrates 25th with unreleased Whitney Houston songs

October 12, 2017 - New York, NY -- In honor of the 25th anniversary of the iconic film The Bodyguard, Legacy Recordings, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Fontainebleau Miami Beach are respectively celebrating its legacy with the release of a brand new collection of Whitney Houston live and studio recordings, special features and special events & activations at the hotel.

First Listen: Soweco and U-Nam will "Keep On"

(October 12, 2017) Guitarist extraordinaire U-Nam recently introduced us to a groovetastic band from Sweden called Soweco. Consisting of members Frosche, Matte Roos and Peter Gustavsson, Soweco straddles the border between soul and jazz to create music that should definitely appeal to adult soul audiences throughout the US and Europe.

The band’s new single that is connecting all over is “Keep On,” and one listen will show you why: It bears a steady groove and a great melody, all supported by the band and a guest appearance from U-Nam.

R.I.P. jazz drummer and Schoolhouse Rock pioneer, Grady Tate

(October 11, 2017) He was known as an innovative jazz drummer and singer, but for many folks he was the guy who helped them learn their multiplication tables. We are sad to note the death, at age 85, of Grady Tate.

The North Carolina-born Tate first made a name for himself as the drummer in Quincy Jones’s band in the mid 60s. His innovative “on top of the beat” playing made his work recognizable to jazzheads, and was particularly notable in hard bop and soul recordings.
